First images from 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple

According to CinemaDrame News Agency, Sony has unveiled the first images from 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple and promised that the official trailer will be released within 24 hours. The sequel to 28 Years Later was filmed back-to-back with the previous installment and will premiere next January.

Nia DaCosta, known for The Marvels and Candyman, directed the film from a screenplay by Alex Garland. Danny Boyle, director of 28 Days Later, serves as producer on the project.

The cast includes Alfie Williams, Jack O’Connell, Ralph Fiennes, Chi Lewis-Parry, Erin Kellyman, and Emma Laird. Cillian Murphy is expected to reprise his role from 28 Days Later.

The story of The Bone Temple follows the character Spike, played by Alfie Williams, who is forced to join the brutal cult led by Sir Jimmy Crystal, portrayed by Jack O’Connell.

Speaking to Rolling Stone, DaCosta said: “My big idea when talking to the producers, including Danny and Alex, was: ‘I’m going to make this film my own. I’m not trying to make it look like a Danny Boyle film.’ Because that’s impossible. He’s such a unique director.”

O’Connell added: “In the end, we see that nature is an unstoppable force. Nature prevails. The world goes on with or without humanity. But I don’t think the infected are the villains of the story. The film makes you reflect on that.”

Boyle previously confirmed Murphy’s return in the second installment: “We haven’t been paid for the third one yet. I think it depends on how the first sequel performs. But I hope it does well, so they’ll pay us for a third. Everyone’s waiting, including Cillian. He’s in the second. I shouldn’t give too much away. They’ll kill me.”

28 Years Later: The Bone Temple will be released on January 16, 2026.
